Just Tasted // 2013 Brian’s Syrah Pigoni Ranch Vineyard
The weather has been absolutely magnificent these last few weeks, which means our deck has been our favorite place to relax and enjoy the evening after a long day of work. On one of these wonderful evenings we decided to pop open a lovely little bottle we picked up from Byington Vineyards on our usual weekend “vineyard hopping”. I never thought I would actually put those two word together, let alone actually go to a vineyard in general. Ever since I took my first job in the culinary industry, at a wine shop/ gourmet shop, I dreamed of one day getting the opportunity to visit the wine country and taste, from the source, the wines I was surrounded by on a daily basis. Now, I live here and it blows my mind that I can drive a few miles into the mountains and sip on wines half of the country never get to experience. I’m beyond blessed!
So the wine we opened was a rather interesting bottle as we had the opportunity to hang out with the winemaker, tour the barrel rooms and taste a few wines still in barrel. I was a great experience. The 2013 Brian’s Syrah Pigoni Ranch Vineyard was rich and full-flavored. It was the best way to enjoy the wonderful sunset on the deck and chat about random life. You could taste deep cherry and dark berries with a hefty amount of spice. I found it to be heavy in tannins, but amazing non-the-less. Of course, if you were to enjoy this with a meal it would be phenomenal with hearty meats, steaks or roasts.
The property of the vineyard is enchanting, magical and set deep in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Each row of vines is bookend by deep red roses bushes and olive trees fill the remaining areas. I feel as though I’ve been swept away to Tuscany with all of this lush foliage and the expansive Spanish-style estate. They also have a breathtaking view of the mountain peaks and valleys from a wonderful little picnic area to the left of the building. Yep! I’m in love with this place!
I could sit here for hours and daydream. Maybe pack a picnic and sip on one of Byington Vineyards delicious bottles while watching the sun set into the ocean somewhere off in the distance. I wonder if they would mind if I simply move in and never leave?
Barrel Tasting Tour
We were able to tour the barrel rooms where they age the wines in deep cave-like rooms under the house. It was pretty great to see this and taste a few of the barrels they will be bottling in the near future. Our lovely guide, Brian, was a delight to interact with and ask questions. And of course he was the fantastic individual who’s bottle we are currently drinking. He really knows his stuff. You can see him below, pulling wine from one of the barrels. What an amazing day that was. I look forward to spending many more vineyard hopping weekends there as well as bringing friends and family there when they visit! Cheers!
